I've read part of "Word Freak" which is a look inside the world of competetive Scrabble players and they are completely mental. Professional players, people who travel the country or world getting in and winning Scrabble tournaments don't think of Scrabble as a word game, it's a strategy game. First you memorize all the two letter words you can form, then you memorize all the three letter words, then four letter words and so on. Then players start trying to play words in such a way that you block your opponent from being able to play any good words. It's a completely different type of game to an expert than it is to a casual player.

If you want to learn how to be a great player I'd suggest reading Word Freak, it's good but I couldn't finish it because they people are completely out of their minds. One guy in his attempt to be a great Scrabble player gave up all his worldly possessions and lived on the street so that he could focus more on being a Scrabble player. That's insane, and yet, he's one of the greatest Scrabble players in the world. But the book does give tips on how to be a better Scrabble player, like learning all the legal words, starting with the two letter words and going up from there.

I hope this has been of some help. What makes a great Scrabble player?
Look at words, everywhere you go. Don't read them, just notice them. Do crossword puzzles, start with easy ones and work your way up, they are great for building a vocabulary. Obscure words, like you find in Crossword Puzzle Dictionaries are great to have floating around in your head.

I was raised with scrabble, crossword puzzles and lots of word games.
I printed a tournament scrabble dictionary and keep it handy when I play.

This is a good website to use.

Concentrate on checkers, and forget all those pesky things called words.
Play with dumb people who had parents that loved them. I know you have several on your friends list... and have a dictionary handy, they cheat every chance they get. Beanus and mastablader are NOT words.
You need to play losers like me to build up your confidence before you play with the big dogs.
WTF Justice?? Beanus is THE word!

Beanus up to yo' motha!
Get 2 copies of a Scrabble dictionary. Once you do that, contact me.
Screw Scrabble, Missy's already a lock. Come play poker with me.
A couple extra tiles from another Scrabble board... maybe a Z and a Q etc.
use flashcards to learn new vocab and play with weak people to build up your confidence!
